United affair East leader places six players on MLS All-Star teamPosted: Thursday July 08, 1999 06:32 PM
NEW YORK (AP) -- Marco Etcheverry, last year's most valuable player, and five other D.C. United players were selected Thursday to start for the Eastern Conference in the MLS All-Star Game. Etcheverry, the Bolivian midfielder, led all players in fan voting with 50,949, 9,000 more than his closest rival, United teammate and defender Eddie Pope (41,850). The match, to be played July 17 at San Diego, will be part of a doubleheader with an exhibition match between Chivas of Mexico, and Universidad Catolica of Chile. After last season's format of pitting the American stars against their international counterparts, this year's game reverts back to matching East vs. West. Etcheverry and Pope will be joined in the starting lineup by teammates Tom Presthus in goal, defender Jeff Agoos, midfielder Ben Olsen and forward Roy Lassiter, the league leader with 14 goals.
Defender and former U.S. national team captain Thomas Dooley and his front-running teammate Brian McBride from the Columbus Crew also were selected, along with midfielders Carlos Valderrama of the Tampa Bay Mutiny, John Harkes of New England and Tab Ramos of the New York-New Jersey MetroStars. The Western Conference starters were dominated by the defending MLS champion Chicago Fire. Three of the Fire's Eastern European connection, forward Roman Kosecki and midfielder Peter Nowak of Poland and defender Lubos Kubik of the Czech Republic, led five Chicago players on the starting team.
Zach Thornton, who replaced Jorge Campos as the No. 1 goalkeeper in Chicago, and U.S. national team midfielder Chris Armas also were chosen. The San Jose Clash placed two players on the starting team for the West: forward Raul Diaz Arce and U.S. national team midfielder Eddie Lewis. Rounding out the West team were defenders Marcelo Balboa of Colorado and Alexi Lalas of the Kansas City Wizards, midfielder Cobi Jones of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Preki of Kansas City. The reserves for both teams will be announced Friday.
