Biography: Three-year starter who finished with 30 tackles/11 tackles for loss/4 sacks as a senior after posting 53/14.5/6.5 the prior year. Struggled with a lower body injury during the second half of his senior season.
Positives: Explosive pass rushing defensive end who gets a lot of momentum going up the field. Fires off the snap with a terrific first step, displays overall quickness in his game and plays with leverage. Fluid moving about the field, quick if asked to twist or stunt and displays solid change-of-direction ability. Rarely off his feet, smooth moving in every direction of the field and shows a short burst of speed in pursuit. Knifes between blockers to get behind the line of scrimmage and works his hands throughout the action to protect himself. Nifty, agile lineman who can also drop off the line of scrimmage and play in space. Does not give up and works hard to be productive.
Negatives: More of a first-step lineman and rather easily disrupted by blocks. Lacks bulk and controlled by a single opponent or engulfed at the point of attack. Not a great pursuit lineman and cannot sustain his speed.
Analysis: Johnson was a college defender who made a lot of plays behind the line of scrimmage and shows natural pass rushing skills. He lacks classic size/speed numbers but has the ability to get to the quarterback, which makes him an attractive prospect. Johnson will initially be a pass rush specialist at the next level, and can eventually grow into an every down defender.
