Kelly Johnson - Johnson doubled, tripled...
Jesse LitschLitsch threw a four-hit shutout and the Toronto Blue Jays completed a three-game sweep with a 9-0 victory over the Twins on Thursday night. In what has been an up-and-down season, Litsch has been back on his game lately. He's 2-1 with a 0.94 ERA in his last four starts, pitching at least six shutout innings in three of those outings. He only struck out three on Thursday, however, and has just 71 strikeouts in 143 2-3 innings this season.
Jose GuillenGuillen had two hits and drove in three runs in the Royals' 9-6 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader against Oakland on Thursday. Still, it's been a struggle for Guillen these last few months, as he's batting .188 with just 12 walks in his last 56 games. He's also had multiple behavioral problems.
Ervin SantanaSantana struck out eight in 7 1-3 innings, allowing one run and six hits and moving to 15-5 as the Angels beat Detroit 7-1 on Thursday. Perhaps the most impressive part of Santana's season has been his road numbers. After going 1-10 with an 8.38 ERA on the road in 2007, he's now 10-2 with a 3.16 mark in 16 road starts this year. He's 4-0 with a 2.31 ERA overall since the beginning of August.
Kenny RogersRogers was removed from Thursday's 7-1 loss to the Angels after he gave up four straight singles starting the third inning, his shortest start since he gave up seven runs and got just two outs at Cleveland on July 25, 2006. The 43-year-old left-hander, who allowed six runs and eight hits in two innings, has lost three straight starts and seven of eight. "I'm not tired. I feel fine," Rogers said. "I had no reason for failing. I went out there and didn't get it done. That's the only way to look at it."
Tom Gorzelanny - Gorzelanny gave up three...
Tom GorzelannyGorzelanny gave up three runs and seven hits in 3 2-3 innings of the Pirates' 8-6 loss to Cincinnati on Thursday. Gorzelanny is 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA in three starts since he was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis. He's 6-9 with a 6.64 ERA in the majors this year after going 14-10 with a 3.88 ERA in 2007.
Ryan SweeneyAfter going 0-for-5 in the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against Kansas City, Sweeney was 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs in the nightcap. The A's still got swept, 5-4 and 9-6. Sweeney hopes Thursday night's effort will help him snap out of a slump. He was 14-for-72 (.194) in his previous 17 games, also spending time on the disabled list during that time with a thumb injury.
Nate McLouthMcLouth hit his 24th home run of the season in the Pirates' 8-6 loss to Cincinnati on Thursday. It was the second homer in six games for McClouth, who hadn't hit one in his previous 22 contests. Overall, he's four shy of the franchise record for homers by a center fielder, set by Brian Giles in 1999.
Scott KazmirKazmir allowed one hit in six scoreless innings of a 7-5 win over the New York Yankees on Thursday. Kazmir hasn't allowed a run in 11 1-3 innings spanning his last two starts - both wins. The Rays are 8-1 in the left-hander's nine starts since the All-Star break, and Kazmir's 4-1 with a 2.92 ERA in that stretch.
Mike LambThe Brewers signed Lamb on Friday, hoping to bolster their roster for the final month of the season. A nine-year veteran who has played for Texas, Houston and Minnesota, Lamb hit .233 with one homer and 32 RBIs in 81 games with the Twins this year. He was released Thursday after being designated for assignment, and will not be eligible for Milwaukee's postseason roster if the Brewers advance to the playoffs for the first time since 1982.
Carlos QuentinQuentin has a broken wrist, and the Chicago White Sox said the left fielder will have surgery next week. Quentin was removed from the lineup before Tuesday's game because of what the White Sox described then as a sore right forearm, and he hasn't played since. The team said Friday that he was hurt during Monday's game at Cleveland. A screw will be inserted into the wrist, and he will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks. Quentin is batting .288 with 36 homers and 100 RBIs.
Ian KinslerKinsler will have season-ending surgery to repair a sports hernia. Kinsler last played Aug. 17, and an MRI the following day revealed the injury. Kinsler was hopeful of avoiding surgery and possibly playing again this season, but he remains sore and the Rangers said Friday he will have surgery next week. A first-time All-Star this year, Kinsler hit .319 with 18 homers, 71 RBIs, 41 doubles and 26 steals in 121 games.
