Maryland coach Gary Williams joined the show to talk about the state of his team going into the Tournament and recent criticism on Capitol Hill about his graduation rate.

Williams said that a Washington Post report of Maryland having the lowest graduation rate in the field of 65 isn't fair. Here's why:

1. The report cited numbers from 1999-2003
2. Four of his players left for the NBA
3. Two of his players graduated, but not within the five-year span the NCAA counts.

"It's amazing the timing of the articles that come out," Williams said.

Williams also said his recent rates are much better. "We've graduated nine out of our last 11 players," Williams said.

Regarding this year's team, Williams said even though the Terps are a high-scoring team, they can play defense when they have to and thinks they can play well in this year's Tournament.

New TNT MLB analyst and potentially still active pitcher John Smoltz joined the show to talk about the possibility of retirement and share his bracket expertise.

Smoltz has an incredible history with the NCAA Tournament. He's won our celebrity pool two years in a row. He has Villanova over Kansas State in the Friends of Dan bracket pool.

Regarding his future, Smoltz said the networks he's doing work with, TBS and MLB Network, have been very flexible and will let him pitch again if the opportunity arises.

"It's a great opportunity to do the thing that I love and learned to love -- broadcast the game and talk about the game in a narrative way," Smoltz said.

Smoltz did say there is a chance he could pitch again, but it's looking less likely. "The scope has gone way down for the ability to pitch for baseball teams," Smoltz said.

Smoltz said he didn't want to make a knee-jerk reaction to retiring. "For me, this is just a process," Smoltz said. "And the process will go fairly quick and I'll come to an understanding one way or the other."

A Daily Recap of the Dan Patrick Show ...

Q & A with LaDainian Tomlinson

DP: If Brett Favre said he was coming back to Minnesota, would that have changed your mind?
LT: I would have still went to New York.

DP: I don't believe you. I wish I could see your face right now. Did you guys text?
LT: I knew he had been in both places. I kind of wanted to get his idea of both places.

DP: He lobbied you to go to Minnesota, didn't he?
LT: Yeah, I mean, he definitely did.

DP: Did he get a hold of you first or did you get a hold of him?
LT: He reached out to me.

DP: Doesn't that lead you to believe he's going to come back and play?
LT: Yeah it does, but like I said before, that had nothing to do with my decision. I think at the end of the day, even though Favre hasn't said he's coming back, you just didn't know for sure.

DP: If Favre is in Minnesota still playing, who has a better chance of going to the Super Bowl, Minnesota or the Jets?
LT: That's a good question. Both of them were in the conference championship game last year. I can't put one up over the other.
